PREVIEW: Sheffield Makes Music with big names and new bands on BBC Music Day - full line up and times

Sheffield will rock as it blows its own trumpet as a national capital of music with big names, breaking bands and even a star of stage, screen and TV celebrating BBC Music Day on Friday.

Shameless star Maxine Peake - who also played barrister Martha Costello QC in the BBC legal drama Silk and appeared in Oscar winning The Theory Of Everything - will show her musical talents.

The 41-year-old is a Bolton girl but she's highlighting the rich music scene in Sheffield with a late-night gig at Yellow Arch Studios, around midnight, with Electronic act Eccentronic Research Council.

But first the city will turn up the volume with 22 events in what is billed as Sheffield Makes Music all day on Friday, June 3, 2016.

Fun band the Everly Pregnant Brothers, with Unite, the Union’s brass band, will headline in the Peace Gardens, at 8pm.

Reverend and the Makers' frontman Jon McClure is doing an acoustic set in the Winter Garden, at 2.30pm.

The Crookes are amongst other big names playing at City of Makers Gallery, on Charles Street, from 1pm.

Local bands will be busking up and down on the trams, from the University to the train station, with young rockers Liberty Ship getting things rolling at 9am.

Bands will also perform on the Bus Stage, in Barkers Pool - outside Sheffield City Hall - with Barnsley indie newcomers Sundance first up at noon.

Nessun Dorma will be performed from the Town Hall balcony by Gareth Lloyd at 5.15pm followed by CBBC presenter Karim and Woof the dog.

Sheffield rising stars Coco perform at Sadacca, at 9pm.

Shoppers will also be able to bop along to a headphone disco as they shop in the Moor Market.

It is part f the national BBC Music Day, which will see Duran Duran and Laura Mvula live at Eden, Travis and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in concert, live music at 40 iconic bridges, and unique musical celebrations across the UK including a vegetable orchestra led by Shaun the Sheep.

"Sheffield Makes Music is part of the BBC’s national event which will give the city the chance to show off its music heritage with acts to suit all ages and tastes," said a spokesperson.

"The day’s line-up has been made possible thanks to support from the University of Sheffield, Sheffield’s Business Improvement District (BID), Hope Works and Arts Council England.

"It comes shortly after a music report, commissioned by the University of Sheffield which outlined the city’s booming music sector and how Sheffield is well-positioned to be the UK's leading music city."
