Time is running out to save a Pontefract cafe that gives jobs to adults with learning difficulties

Funding for the The Real Bread Company Cafe on Gillygate will run out on Sunday.

And chairman John Hughes says he has run out of options to keep the social enterprise running.

Mr Hughes said: "We will not be able to stay open and at this stage we are working on closing.

“We’ve had several meetings with the authorities and the different people involved, but we just can’t stay open without any money.”

The Real bread Company Cafe on Gillygate, Pontefract, offers employment and work skills to adults with learning difficulties.

The cafe was set up in 2015 by The Pontefract Family Centre .

As well as helping those with learning difficulties, the cafe also sells artisan bread and it is currently home to the Pontefract Community Kitchen, who feed the homeless every week.

But the enterprise has failed to make the money it needed to remain open, this includes staff wages, a lease, heating and lighting.

It has previously received grants to help it make ends meet.

Mr Hughes said: “It’s sad for the staff, my heart goes out to all of them, some of them have been there since it opened.

“It seems pointless trying to hold on, we’d have to sign a lease and we cannot do that without money.”
