As archaeologists in Fitzwilliam uncover ancient kilns believed to date back to Roman times, we take a look back at some of the most exciting and important archaeological discoveries ever made in Wakefield, Pontefract and Castleford. How many of these do you remember?
5. Digging deep
As recently as 1972, much of the stonework we recognise today was concealed under the ground. In more recent years, work has been carried out to repair stonework and walkways, as well as remove vegetation which could have damaged the remaining masonry.
6. Study at Sandal
Though it now stands in ruins, Sandal Castle was once an important location. The site is believed to date back to the 12th century, and was the subject of large excavation works in the 1960s and 70s, which helped to uncover large areas of surviving masonry and pottery vessels.
7. Shocking find
But not all discoveries are intentional. In 2015, workmen in Oulton were shocked to discover Neolithic and Iron Age pottery as they began preparing an area for new homes. Archaeologists were called in and confirmed that the remnants were Peterborough Ware pottery, which is very rare in West Yorkshire. Historic ditches were also discovered in the area.
